HDTV Explained
What is HDTV?
HDTV stands for High Definition TeleVision.
What Came Before HDTV
For most of us, apart from the transition to color, the basic TV system hasn't
changed. We've been used to watching the traditional TV with pictures generated
by a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). This system was fully analog from the point of transmission
to the display on your TV. But this system which we've gotten used to has two main limitations.
Firstly the analog signal is susceptible to extraneous noise which would result in a
grainy picture and distorted sound. Secondly, there is a limit to the resolution (i.e. number
of pixels) in the picture due to the limits imposed on the transmitted signal. Digital
signals, like the ones from DVD players are good for viewing pre-recorded material but even
these need to be converted to analog signals and the lower resolution of the TV.
HDTV Has Fixed All That
There are two ways that HDTV improves viewers TV watching experience. Firstly the digital
signal means that the quality is not impaired by noise. Secondly the high definition
means that the resolution of the picture is better, in other words it is a better
representation of real life.
HDTV Pictures
Standard digital TV has an aspect ratio of 4:3 whereas HDTV uses 16:9 which is similar to
cinema screen format. The resolution of standard digital TV is not much different to analog
TV but HDTV has the capability for 10 times the resolution.
What You Must Have to View HDTV
There are three things you need. First you must have a source of HDTV signals - this is where
DishHD programming comes in. Secondly you need an HDTV reciever - once again these
are available as part of your Dish Network package. Thirdly, you will need a TV capable
of displaying HDTV signals.
HD DVR
Coming fast on the heals of HDTV is High Definition DVR. This allows you to record
HD programs and play them back with the exactly the same HD quality.
